William Stephens (born December 26, 1859 in Eaton, Ohio; died April 25, 1944 in Los Angeles, California) succeeded Hiram Johnson as the twenty-fourth Governor of California, serving between March 15, 1917 and January 8, 1923. Following the end of Stephens' term as Governor, Friend Richardson (born William Richardson on December 1, 1865 in Friends Colony, Michigan; died September 6, 1943 in Berkeley, California) became the twenty-fifth Governor of California, serving between January 9, 1923 and January 4, 1927.
