The US Congress consist of two houses known as the US Senate and US House of Representatives. They make up the Legislative Branch of our federal government, as outlined in the US Constitution.

The US Senate is comprised of 100 Senators, two elected from each of the 50 states. Senators serve six year terms, and one third of the Senate is up for re-election every even numbered year. There are no term limits for the Senate.

The US House of Representatives consists of 435 members, each representing a geographic district with a population of approximately 650,000 - 700,000 citizens. The number of Representatives per state varies from 53 (California) to 1 (Wyoming) depending on the state's population from the last Census. Representatives serve a two-year term, so every district is up for election every two years. There are no term limits for the House of Representatives.

Many state legislatures have a similar make-up, although the terms and number of members may vary greatly.
