What makes a diesel blow blue or white smoke?

Could be the result of a poor fuel-to-air mixture. It may be something as simple as replacing the air filter, or it could be much more complicated.

It could also be from water getting into the system somehow.. might be in the fuel, or, much worse, might be a head gasket issue.
