Prior to the Civil War, steamships required a huge amount of coal and this was generally soft coal that produced terrible fumes and smoke. Speeds were very slow, usually only 8 or 9 knots. Most steamships were not very seaworthy and were not capable of long voyages or serving in violent weather. They also had a habit of catching fire or exploding.
