What was the symbolism of the white star and red circle on US aircraft?

On or about 1942, the US Military began getting away from utilizing the US white star insignia with a CIRCLE around it...during aerial combat it looked too much like a Japanese red dot (the sun). Aerial dog-fights were confusing as it was, without adding confusing aircraft insignia to the fuselage and wings.
