Roman houses had one major support beam running through the centre of the roof. When a criminalw as charged with execution, this beam would be removed, making the house collapse. The criminal would then have to carry this beam of great weight to the site of execution. He would then be pinned on thsi single piece of wood (a stake). This was an effective way of torture. Asll the weight would be either on a persons hands, or his feet, meaning the nails would tear at flesh and causing great pain. His collapsed house would be look at with disgust by others and often be used as a publice levy to show such disgust
