In the 1945 General Election, which marked the end of the national Government (coalition) under Churchill, Labour won a substantial majority of seats and Clement Atlee (the deputy PM in the wartime coalition) became Prime Minister. He won again in 1950 but with a very slim majority. In 1951 Atlee requested another election with a view to consolidating his position, but instead the Conservatives won the most seats and Winston Churchill again became Prime Minister until he retired.
