There are many precautions to take when cutting with any tools, here are a few:
1. Ensure that the cutting disc is correctly fitted and that any protective guards are in place. In the UK, the equipment may need to be electrically PAT tested. (Portable Appliance Testing).
2. Wear the correct Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Goggles, Gloves, Ear defenders etc.
3. Ensure that the steel is securely fixed and will not move during cutting.
4. Create a safe working area. Screens/barriers and warning signs may be required if other people are nearby.
5. Remove any flammable items from the area (Oily rags, fuel cans, paper etc). Sparks can cause fires. A fire-extinguisher should be on standby and possibly a fire-watcher.
