How do you climb a ladder?

It is not possible to climb a ladder in World of Warcraft like it is in some other Video Games. If there is a ladder to get to a higher level, and it is meant to be used, there will be a gear icon as your mouse pointer when you hover over it. When you click on it, it will just make you "jump" up the ladder.
