It depends on where they are, initially! A volunteer can advance to career officer; career officers can advance to leading battalions, to becoming training officers, to assistant chief, to chief - depending on the additional training they take and years of service, of course. One can be a medical training officer for the EMS side, or for practicals. One can go on to teach in a college-setting classroom. One can get into the - Yuk - political arena with state/national offices. FEMA. Forest Service. Take your skills and experience to one of our fine magazines as a writer... editor... artist. It's all up to you and want to want to do, how hard you're willing to work, what effort you put into both your work and studies, what other skills you combine with the FF (as in teaching, writing, etc). The list is endless.
