What is the numbering difference between the F-14 F-16 and F-18?

Well, there all even numbers. The f-15 is a jet, was designed (i think) to fill in for the weaknesses of the f-14. The f-17 is a real jet (sort of). It actually was a prototype that never got in production, at the time it was dubbed the yf-17 search it on wikipedia.
