What is the purpose for the map sensor on a 1999 astro van?

The MAP (Manifold Absolute Pressure) sensor monitors the pressure inside the intake manifold and sends that info to the ECM (Engine Control Module). The ECM uses that info and input from other sensors to make the engine run its best under all conditions.
