The patent term was raised from 14 years to 20 years with the enactment of the Uruguay Round Agreements Act in 1994. This change was implemented as part of the Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS), which aimed to harmonize patent laws internationally and enhance the protection of intellectual property rights. The new term became effective for patents filed after June 8, 1995.
