The need to process and digitize massive amounts of health information has created several new job fields. Health information technicians and Health IT are just two of them.

Health information technicians handle the following types of jobs related to patient information:

• Creating and maintaining patient records

• Maintaining patient information databases

• Using classification codes to work with insurance companies

• Tracking patient records

• Helping ensure patient health information is secure.

The number of people working as health information technicians will increase 21% by 2020, faster than the average of all occupations nationwide, according to projections from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).

Training and education can range from a certificate program through bachelors degree or higher.
