Lewis and Clark led the Corps of Discovery from 1804 to 1806. Their expedition was commissioned by President Thomas Jefferson to explore the newly acquired Louisiana Territory and find a practical route to the Pacific Ocean. They departed from St. Louis, Missouri, in May 1804 and returned in September 1806.
