Who was the first American caught spying on the british?

Several Americans were caught spying on the British and some were executed. Among the most famous was army captain Nathan Hale, a former schoolmaster who was hanged in New York City on September 22, 1776. He is famous for reportedly stating "My only regret is that I have but one life to lose for my country."
