The first sunglasses, made from flat panes of smoky quartz, are believed to have been used in China around the 12th century. However, the modern design of sunglasses, with tinted lenses and frames, emerged in the 18th century. James Ayscough created sunglasses in the 1750s with green or amber lenses to reduce glare. These early versions were primarily intended to aid vision rather than to protect against UV rays.
