There have been many oil spills on land, in particularly from oil pipelines. The quantities of oil spilled will depend on the flow rate through the pipeline and how quickly the spill can be stopped. Usually, the initial efforts are to contain the spread of the oil, and this can be done using berms or dikes. The BP oil spill occurred on water but much of the oil ended up in the marshes. BP attempted to contain the contamination by building berms. Oil can recovered by using chemicals to absorb the oil (sorbents). The effects of the spill can be to some degree mitigated by use of dispersents. In the Rxxon Valdez spill, fertilizers were used on the rocky coastline to increase thebiological action of bacteria breakdown the oil.
So in sum, when oil is spilled on land or in wet areas, there are many methods.
Oil generally floats to the surface, so when a spill occurs in deep oil, there will not be significant concentrationson theocean floor. This is fortunate, as there is no way to remove any contaminant from the ocean floor.
