In 'A Child Called It' what happens to the mother?

She obviously has mental health issues particularly related to alcohol comsumption, that is, being an alcoholic. Therefore, she should be assessed by a mental health professional and required to have punishment in addition to some education to learn about the consequences of her actions!!
