South Carolina was the first Confederate state to secede, on December 20, 1860.

Five more states seceded in January (Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, and Louisiana), and Texas in February, with the remainder (Virginia, Arkansas, Tennessee, and North Carolina) following the outbreak of hostilities (April-May).
