$1,700 per year on clothing, or 3%, and, as a nation, we're hoarding about 20 billion garments per year. While this may seem like a lot, according to the book Overdressed by Elizabeth Cline, "We pay less for clothes when measured as a share of our income than ever in history" and that, according to 100 Years of Consumer Spending, a 2006 study by the U.S. Department of Labor, the average American family in 1900 had an income of $750 per year and spent 15% of their earnings on clothing. Years ago, people had much less clothing and mended, altered and cared for it. Now, clothing has basically become disposable.
