The first Olympic games were held in Greece. The Greeks believed that the 12 main deities lived on Mount Olympus. So they named the games in honor of their Gods. That name has filtered into modern history and is the name for the Winter and Summer Olympic games

In addition, there is a town on the Peleponnese named Olympia. It was the site of the original olympic games held in the 776 B.C.E. A large part of the stadium and hippodrome are is still intact and may be visited. Olympia is also the site of one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, the Statue of Zeus at Olympia. The statue is long gone but part of the temple remains.
