When do you need to program car computers?

If you remove the computer of any car the replacement computer needs to be progammed to the car. If essential components are changed the computer will need interrogating and necessary adjustments made. Occasionally the computer will be reprogrammed by the manufacturer if there is a software revision. Lastly the computer can be programmed for performance.
