What can biologists learn from studying scats?

Biologists can learn many things from studying scat. They can learn what kind of animals live in a certain area by examining scat and comparing it with other samples. They can learn whether the animal is a carnivore, herbivore, or omnivore by looking at undigested bits in the scat. A carnivore would have bones, hair, feathers, etc, in its scat. A herbivore would have indigestible plant matter and seeds/pits in its scat, and an omnivore would have bones, hair, plant matter, and seeds. Hope this helps!
