How is water composed of hydrogen and oxygen to put out fires?

Water molecules are composed of two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom bonded together. When water is applied to a fire, it can help extinguish the flames by cooling the fuel below its ignition temperature and by smothering the fire by creating a barrier between the fuel and the oxygen in the air.
