Why does your gas spray out of gas cap on lawnmower?

The tank is overfilled. Only fill the gas tank to one inch below the top of the tank. Back pressure in the fuel line may be another cause, but that is remotely possible since it would require a very clogged air filter and defective intake valve (4 cycle engine).
