The Gamma Knife is form of stereotactic radiOSurgery used to treat brain disorder such as brain tumor and vascular malformations, without the need for open surgery. Although it was named Gamma Knife, it uses gamma rays instead of surgical knife.

The Gamma Knife is the "Gold standard of radiOSurgery. Computer planned finely collimated gamma-rays are precisely onto and intracranial target to ablate it, without the need for open surgery. It can also be an alternative or adjunct to conventional open surgery.

The Gamma Knife is a treatment unit designed to deliver a highly conformal dose of radiation thearpy to intracranial sites using 201 convergent beams emanating from cobalt-60 radiations sources. The Gamma Knife was invented by Prof. Leksell and Larson and the first clinical work was done in 1967 at the karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden. Since that times, tens of thousands of patients have treated with Gamma Knife radiOSurgery and significant research has been done on the safe and effective application of stereotactic radiOSugery for the treatment of several intracranial conditions
