Sponge painting is done in one of two manners. Addition or subtraction.
Addition - apply a solid base coat of your choice. Foe latex or acrylic - Mix your second colour - 1 part faux finishing compound, 1/2 part water, 2 parts paint, pour into a clean paint tray, dip your sea sponge into the paint mixture and apply randomly to the wall. Keep a wet edge and work carefully into corners and small areas. You may want to use a multi-colour application for this, use several related colours our for a mono-chromatic scheme use several shades of the same colour.
Subtraction - apply your base coat and allow to dry. Mix your second colour in the same manner as above. Pour the mixture into a clean paint tray and apply with a roller. use a dampened sea sponge to remove colour from the wall. Keep your sponges (you will need several) clean and just barely damp for best results.
The Addition style can be very dynamic and dramatic, the subtraction style can be very subtle and sophisticated.
