What is the reason for different designs of parachutes?

Several possible answers to this question so I'll sum it up to 2 base answers.

1. some designs have been made simply to improve on the older designs and make them safer/easier to use.

2. some modern designs are better suited for different purposes. A skydiver for instance don't use the same parachute as a base jumper.
