1. The Story Parable
The story parable has a beginning, middle, and an end. Each detail does not necessarily have a spiritual application, the details are there to add to the story. The story is realistic, usually making one main point
Example: The parable of the lost son. (Luke 15:11-32)
2. Similitude
The similitude is more like an illustration taken from everyday life. Jesus often said "The kingdom of heaven is like," in these instances He is saying that the kingdom of heaven is illustrated by the following situation.
Example: Matthew 13:31 Another parable He put forth to them, saying: "The kingdom of heaven is like a Mustard Seed, which a man took and sowed in his field,...............
And maybe
3. Allegory, Metaphor
In John 10:1-16, Jesus presents Himself as the Good Shepherd. Maybe this is not strictly a parable but an extended metaphor
