It depended on what country you were a child in. In the United States, your childhood would have been much the same without the war. Rationing meant less comfort and luxury, but it was probably less deprived than being a child in the Depression. In Great Britain in 1940, you might have to go into an underground shelter during a bombing. In Germany in 1945, you might be called upon to put on an army uniform and blow up an Allied tank with a panzerfaust. If you were a Jewish child in Europe, life would have been extremely bad, assuming you lived.
