What is the origin of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland?

the main plot of Alice in wonderland is that she starts a mysterious journey down a rabbit hole. she meets new people and weird creatures. In the end her journey ends up with her fighting a beast. Finally she returns home and denies her proposal.
