When did you have to start using zip codes?

In the US 2 digit postal codes started in 1943 because many of the regulay postal clerks were away fighting WWII and the government the codes would help the inexperienced new clerks in sorting the mail. 5 digit "Zip" codes went into effect on July 1, 1963. ZIP stood for Zoning Improvement Plan.
