World War II was extremely beneficial to the American economy. It finally ended the Great Depression by 1940, putting millions of Americans back to work in wartime industries. The United States was the only country in the world that came out of the war, stronger militarily and economically then at the beginning. The American economy more than doubled by 1945. There was a sharp recession after the war, caused by millions of returning servicemen looking for work. That was only temporary after appropriate legislation was passed including the GI Bill
