Haitians were originally brought over on slave ships from West Africa, primarily Togo and Benin. Haiti is also one of the greatest examples of mixing in the Caribbean. Haitians of black African descent, and foreigners have born and raised families in Haiti for generations. The most significant minority groups are Middle Easterners (Lebanese and Syrian), those of Hispanic heritage, as well as mulattos.
