Menthol was first isolated in 1771 by the German chemist and pharmacist, Hieronymus David Gaubius. However, it was later more extensively studied and characterized by other scientists, including the French chemist, Pierre-Joseph Pelletier, in the early 19th century. Menthol is derived from mint oils, particularly from peppermint and spearmint. Its refreshing properties have made it popular in various applications, including medicinal and culinary uses.
