Generally speaking, the United States should not and does not remove embassies from hostile countries. Embassies provide services to Americans in the country, safe haven for persecuted persons, and support on-going business between nations. Embassies can also support relationships that avoid conflict. When hostility is very bad and may lead to war, Americans are often evacuated via the embassy. It is important to keep the embassy open as long as possible in a crisis.
