How do hippos breath out of water?

Hippos can't breathe entirely under water. They have perfectly ordinary lungs to breathe with, so to dive they have to hold their breath.

However, hippos, like many semi-aquatic animals, have their nostrils placed well on top of their snouts, so they can breathe just fine with only the top of their heads above the surface.
