What was used after the cassette tape player?

From a tape point of view it was the 8 track tape, prerecorded and in comparison to the cassette tape very large. Although a tad narrower the loading area was almost as big as a VCR. Strangely it was developed by an aircraft company,"Learjet Corp.' was popular from about 1965 until the late 70's.
