Religious cleansing is a term used when one religion or government uses whatever force necessary to remove members of another faith.

Examples include the Spanish Inquisition and the Salem witch trials.

Religious persecution is the systematic mistreatment of an individual or group of individuals as a response to their religious beliefs or affiliations or lack thereof. Examples include residential schools for natives in North America & the Holocaust.

-The previous answer suggested that Religious cleansing are considered sins by the moral code or commandments of the instigating religion and I agree, but I felt that it did not answer the question sufficiently.
