How do orthodontic rubber bands work?

they attatch to the top tooth, which is nearly always the fang, and the bottom tooth and slowly pull the top or bottom teeth closer together making them straighter. i have had this done and it only took about 6 months to pull the fangs into place, i wear them in bed and take them off in the morning, they make my teeth really tender and sore sometimes though!
