Manifest Destiny appealed to people in the North as it embodied the belief in American exceptionalism and the nation’s divine right to expand its territory across the continent. It offered the promise of economic opportunity, particularly through land ownership and new markets for commerce. Additionally, many Northerners saw expansion as a way to spread democracy and civilization, aligning with their values of progress and reform. However, this belief also contributed to tensions over slavery, as the question of whether new territories would be free or slave-holding became increasingly contentious.
