The leader of Abyssinia, known today as Ethiopia, during its most notable historical period was Emperor Haile Selassie I. He reigned from 1930 until 1974 and is celebrated for his efforts to modernize the country and for his role in the establishment of the Organization of African Unity. Haile Selassie is also a significant figure in the Rastafarian movement, which regards him as a messianic figure. His leadership ended when he was deposed in a coup d'état.
