How do you reset the check engine light on a 2005 Chevrolet Silverado?

In order to clear the check engine indicator:

OBD-II scanner: Insert the OBD-II scanner in the socket under the dashboard, turn the key to on position and scan the codes.

Or unplug the battery: Unplug the negative terminal and wait 15 minutes and then plug back in. This can be used to (Note: potentially only temporarily) shut off the light.

Tip: First of all solve the underlying problem always resetting will not do any good in case a component is failing.
