In 1564, the majority of children did not attend formal schools as we understand them today. Education was primarily available to boys from wealthier families, while girls typically received little to no formal education. Many children, especially from lower socioeconomic backgrounds, contributed to household labor or work in agriculture or trades instead of going to school. The concept of compulsory education was not established until much later.
