What effect does Annie Oakley have on society?

She demonstrated that an expert proficiency with a rifle was not exclusive to males, and was one of the early advocates for women in the military (most notably when she offered to join the war effort during the Spanish American War, and to bring 50 female sharpshooters along with her). She has also become an American icon, coming to symbolize a person with an aptitude for expert marksmanship (especially if female).
