Why did peter rebuke a new convert formerly known as Simon the sorcerer?

Peter denied Jesus in the garden of Gethsemane thrice, but he regretted it and was ashamed of his act. He also made the only attack on the people in the defense of Jesus.

The reason for these acts was fear of appearing complicit in Jesus' illegal (although meritorious) activities.
