The first driver's license is generally attributed to Germany in 1888 when Karl Benz received a permit from the local authorities to operate his motor vehicle. However, the first official driver's licenses as we know them today were introduced in France in 1893. In the United States, Massachusetts issued the first driver's license in 1903.
