Conscription was applied only until the Marian reforms of the army of 107 BC. The reforms made enrolling in the army voluntary. This remained so for the next 580 years. For a period after the reform, there were also some conscripted soldiers. However, the army then became wholly composed of voluntarily enrolled soldiers.
