What is the importance of a debut party?

A debut, in the Philippines, is commonly known as the "sweet eighteen" of a girl. Unlike in Western countries, Filipinos typically pay more attention when a girl reaches 18 years of age, as opposed to sixteen years. Some boys may also choose to have a debut, but this is rare and uncommon.
